The secret to relaxed wedding photos is not the camera. It is the clock.

When the day has room to breathe, it shows in every picture. Here is how I build a wedding day timeline that leaves space for the good stuff, the same way I plan it with couples all over Sacramento, Roseville, and Folsom.

Pad the getting-ready hour

Hair and makeup almost always run long. Build in a cushion so the morning feels calm instead of frantic. Calm photographs beautifully. Rushed does not. This is the part most wedding timelines underestimate.

Think about a first look

A private first look before the ceremony does two things at once. It gives you a quiet moment together on a very loud day, and it frees up the timeline so you are not missing your own cocktail hour for photos. It is not for everyone, and that is fine. But it is worth a real think, especially if you booked both a wedding photographer and a videographer and want both to have room to work.

Chase the golden hour

The hour before sunset is the best light you will get all day, full stop. Steal ten minutes of it for couple portraits. Just ten. Golden hour wedding photos are where the cover-worthy frames come from.

Make a family photo list

Write down the exact groupings you want, in order, with names attached. I run the list out loud, nobody's aunt wanders off, and the whole thing wraps in twenty minutes instead of sixty.
